Weekly Review - March 6th/7th

Our men's Saturday team were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Thurton and Ashby at home in the Crown Fire Central and South Norfolk Ambulance Cup. The defeat will allow us to concentrate on moving up the league with 10 fixtures still to play and also to concentrate on the Pease League Cup Final which will be held at Dereham FC on March 31st (7.30 p.m kick off).

The Men's Sunday Reserves are also finding good form and continued their excellent run with a 2-1 victory over Unicorn Reserves with both goals coming from defender Matt Steward. The Men's A team went down 3-1 at home to Hingham with Robbie Lincoln scoring our goal.

The Ladies team's chances of winning the Eastern Region Premier Division are virtually over after they lost heavily 7-1 at Barking. The team is now left to concentrate on its attempts to win the League Cup for the third consecutive season. Our goal came from Emily Coates.

The Veterans lost by the odd goal of seven at Cromer Crabs with our goals coming from Shaun Simpson (2) and Darren Rial.

The Girls Under-17s are closing in on the league title after beating St Benet's Wasps 9-1. Hannah Waters hit five, Megan Todd 2 and Sarah Browne and S were also on target. The Ladies Hearts team beat bottom club Freethorpe 8-0 and now can only be pipped to the title by Acle. Hannah Waters rounded off another impressive weekend with four more to take her tally for the season to 71. Other scorers were Lauren Matthews (2), Charlie Fisher and Rianne Brister.

The Girls Under-14s now look odds on to finish league runners-up to Norwich City after a close 3-2 victory at home to Blofield. Our goals came from Beth Evans, Ella Stephenson and Sophie Rock and we had to come back from being 2-1 down at half-time.

The Boys Under-16s had a good 3-0 win at home to Nelson (Darren Frost, Adam Edwards and Jake Keeley) and the Under-13s beat Costessey 1-0 with the only goal coming from top scorer Robert Warminger. The Under-12s beat Norman 4-1 with Ashley Gray hitting a hat-trick and the other coming from Lewis Baxter.

The Under-11s lost 4-2 to Wymondham (Harry Denny and Tyler White), the Under-10s went down 2-0 to both Spixworth and Poringland but the Under-9s beat Mulbarton 3-1 (Aaron Standley, Max Beckett and Cameron Whiting).

Praise for Under-12s

Our Under-12s side has received praise following a visit from Norfolk County FA to a recent match at Attleborough. The visit came under the Charter Standard Club monitoring scheme. The assessor gave us a rating of good in all categories which included the behaviour of players', coaches and spectators. The report concludes: "This under-12s squad sets a high standard of behaviour and attitude to football and is a huge credit to Hethersett Athletic. These youngsters set the benchmark, which all the squads throughout the club should try to emulate." Well done to everyone involved.

Ladies 5-A-Side

We are organising a major ladies five-a-side tournament on the Memorial Field on Sunday July 25th. Registration will be from 9 a.m with a 10 a.m start. There will be an all day barbecue and refreshments and entries have already come in from Wymondham, Bungay, Thorpe, Waveney, Aylsham, Taverham, Coltishall, Bohemains and Hethersett. There will also be an Under-15s girls' tournament where entries have already been received from Hethersett and Bohemians.

Race Evening

The club is once again combining with Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club to organise a trip to Newmarket Races. This year's visit will be on June 25th and after race entertainment will be provided by Spandau Ballet. A coach will leave Little Melton Village Sign at 4 p.m and Hethersett Memorial Playing Field at 4.10 p.m. The cost of the trip including coach and racecourse entry is £27.50. Deposits of £10 per ticket are now due.

Fixtures to Go

Despite being into March the club still has well over 100 league fixtures to fulfil. The appalling winter has wiped out a huge number of fixtures, with 109 still to be played. A full list of league results for each team is available by clicking here. The Ladies and Men's Saturday teams have only completed half their league fixtures with 11 and 10 games played respectively. The fixture backlog doesn't take account of cup games to be played as well.

Ton Up Hannah

Congratulations to Ladies Hearts Hotshot Hannah Waters who has become the 12th player in the club's history to score 100 league and cup goals. Hannah took her tally to 100 with a hat-trick at Runton United. She is only the second ladies/girls player to reach the milestone after Sophie Rock who currently has 111 goals.

Team of the Month

Our Saturday men's team has been named Crown Fire Central and South Norfolk League team of the month for November and December. The period saw us win all our league matches with victories over Sporle (5-1), Bawdeswell (6-3) and Wendling (2-1) and also beat Narborough Res 9-0 and Northwold 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Pease League Cup. We also beat Flitcham 1-0 in the Norfolk Primary Cup. The team will be presented with a new match ball by the league at a forthcoming match. Last year we won two monthly awards and were named the Crown Fire League club of this season after winning Division Four and reaching two cup finals.

Sponsorship for Under-9s

Local painter and decorator David Whitworth has kindly sponsored our Under-9 team. David's generosity has supplied a new match kit and also helped to fund a training kit. To see a photograph of the presentation visit the Under-9s page by clicking here.

Sophie Sets Record

Girls Under-14 player Sophie Rock has become the first player from the girls/women's section to notch 100 goals. Sophie did it in style by scoring seven in the  14-1 win over Spixworth. Congratulations Sophie. Congratulations to Sophie who hasn't missed a game over the past two seasons and has reached the ton mark in just 79 games at a rate of more than one goal a game. Partnership with Hethersett Social Club

We have established a strong link with Hethersett Social Club who have kindly offered to provide a trophy cabinet and noticeboard for the club in their headquarters in Queen's Road. We will also be purchasing club membership which will allow all club members to enjoy the facilities of the venue. It is also planned to hold a number of social events and details of these will follow.

County Successes

Congratulations to Megan Todd and Amy Bell for playing for Norfolk Under-16s against Suffolk. The team consisted mainly of local school players with a few centre of excellence players and they came up against the majority of the Ipswich Academy and put up a superb display to only go down 3-0. The team was managed by our Ladies First Team player Kate Ellis who was assisted by our Ladies First team manager Chris Bolderstone. Meanwhile Adele McCrory made her full Norfolk debut in the recent game against Essex while Emily Coates was presented with her commemorative cap for completing 12 county appearances.

Fireworks Success

Hethersett’s first ever community firework spectacular has been heralded a success. Over 600 attended the event in the grounds of Hethersett High School organised by Hethersett Athletic Football Club. A number of local groups including Cringleford Scouts, Hethersett High School, Hethersett Junior School, Hethersett Athletic Football Club and Hethersett Social Club, took the opportunity to get involved and raise funds. The evening included a fireworks display aimed at younger children, followed by a main display for all the family. There was also a story telling tent, face painting, a barbecue and refreshments and sale of luminous gadgets. Thanks to the success of the evening, the football club is looking at repeating it in 2010 with even more community groups becoming involved. The event was supported by a number of sponsors including Gladedale (Anglia) Ltd, Anglian Demolition and Asbestos Ltd, Hugh J. Boswell, Trell Contractors (Watton) Ltd, Warburtons Bakery, RS Signs.
