A National FA Community Charter Club Hethersett Athletic First Team 2007/2008 Sunday September 2nd - League Match 1 Hethersett (2) 5 Delaneys (0) 1 Halton 18, 75 90 mins L. Barrett 25, 49 Steele 83
Venue: Easton College; Weather - warm but dull; Pitch: Hard. Referee Phil Edwards 9 out of 10
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, James Rice, Matt Steward, Matt Barrett, Matt Cartledge, Matt Elwin (sub Will Cook 55 mins), John Curtis (sub Andrew Maxim 78 mins), Chris Steele, Sam Wenham (sub Mark Siddell 60 mins), Lee Barrett, Stuart Halton.
Hethersett opened their league campaign in the best possible way with a stunning victory over fellow championship contenders Delaneys.
Last season Hethersett took just one point from Delaneys. This time it was a different story once Hethersett had weathered the early Delaneys pressure.
The home team took the game by the scruff of the neck and opened the scoring after 18 minutes when Chris Steele sent new signing Stuart Halton through and he fired home. Seven minutes later Lee Barrett worked himself a shooting position on the edge of the box and fired home a low shot.
After the break it was all Hethersett with Lee Barrett heading home at the far post after a superb run and cross from James Rice on 49 minutes. Halton made it four after 75 minutes when he latched onto another through ball and smashed home his second and Chris Steele added a fifth seven minutes from time. Slackness in the Hethersett defence allowed Delaneys in for an injury time consolation goal.
Hethersett had Matt Elwin, Will Cook, Mark Siddell and Stuart Halton all making their first team debuts.
Sunday September 9th - County Cup Round One
Freemasons Arms (0) 0 Hethersett (5) 13 L. Barrett 6, 30,43 Curtis 21 Halton 27, Wenham 49, Steele 51, Elwin 68, Siddell 74, 85, 90 M. Appleton 75, 80

Hethersett breezed through to the next round of the County Cup as they destroyed a game Freemasons team that gave the visitors too much respect and too much time.
Lee Barrett opened the scoring after just six minutes and that opened the floodgates as Hethersett tore through a virtually non existent Freemasons' defence. Goals came at regular intervals with Lee Barrett completing a first half hat-trick. Athletic were five up by the break and continued the pressure throughout the second half.
There was a hat-trick for sub Mark Siddell and two for fellow sub Mark Appleton with John Curtis, Stuart Halton, Sam Wenham, Chris Steele, Matt Elwin also on the scoresheet in a match that was over as a contest virtually as soon as it began. Chris Brownbridge in the Hethersett goal acarcely had a save to make.
Sunday September 16th - League Match 2
Hethersett Athletic (3) 7 Marlbrough (2) 3 Halton 6, L. Barrett 11, 58 25 min, 31 min, 80 min Curtis 37, 86 M. Appleton 77, 83

Hethersett retruned to the top of the Premier Division with a stunning performance against league champions Marlborough.
Athletic started at an extraordinary pace and were 2-0 up in the first 11 minutes with goals from Stuart Halton and Lee Barrett. Marlborough then came back into the match to level at 2-2 before John Curtis scored a fine goal to make it 3-2 at half-time.
Hethersett weathered an early storm from the visitors before producing some top class football that ripped the visitors apart with its speed and precision. Lee Barrett and John Curtis added two more and substitute Mark Appleton also scored twice as Hethersett went on the rampage.
Appleton and Curtis missed good chances to complete hat-tricks as Marlborough tired.
Sunday September 23rd - League Match 3
Mattishall YCOB (2) 2 Hethersett Athletic (5) 7 10 min, 23 min Steward 8, Curtis 34, 36 Halton 39, L. Barrett 41 M. Appleton 66, Siddell 89 Venue Mattishall Playing Field: Weather - Very warm. Pitch hard. Referee V. Petrie 6 out of 10
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Will Cook, Matt Steward, Matt Barrett, Will Cook, John Curtis, Sam Wenham sub Mark Siddell 70 mins), Chris Steele, Stuart Halton (sub Mark Appleton half-time), Lee Barrett, Matt Elwin (sub Dave Stevens 70 mins).
It continues to rain goals for Hethersett as they hammered seven for the second consecutive week - this time at Mattishall Youth Club Old Boys.
Only the Mattishall goalkeeper prevented the scoreline reaching double figures although the home team did stun their top of the table visitors by taking a 2-1 lead in the first half.
Athletic took the lead after eight minutes when Matt Steward volleyed home a Chris Steele corner with the deftest of flicks. Hethersett's good early work was undone, however, as the home side scored after 10 and 23 minutes to take the lead.
Hethersett steadied themselves and four goals in an eight minute period before the break saw them take an unassailable 5-2 half-time lead. John Curtis scored twice in quick succession and Stuart Halton and Lee Barrett continued the scoring spree.
The goalrush calmed down after the break with Hethersett only able to add two more through substitute Mark Appleton after 66 minutes and Mark Siddell just a minute from the end.
Hethersett Athletic (0) 2 Mattishall YCOB (1) 1 Stevens 75, Halton 82 40 mins
Venue: Easton College. Weather: Very warm and bright sunshine. Pitch - Perfect. Referee J. Lain Rogers 0 out of 10
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Matt Cartledge, Sam Wenham (sub Dave Stevens 70 min), Matt Barrett, Matt Steward, Will Cook, Chris Steele, Mark Appleton (sub Stuart Halton 57 min), Matt Elwin (sub Mark Siddell 77 min), Lee Barrett, John Curtis.
Hethersett had to come from behind with two late goals to keep their 100 per cent league record in a match spoilt by some terrible refereeing.
Mr Lain Rogers sent off Lee Barrett and booked three players from each side in a match that didn't have a nasty tackle in it. The referees erratic control of the match has resulted in Hethersett making an official complaint to Norfolk FA about his behaviour.
Mattishall looked an entirely different team from that beaten so easily by Athletic the previous week. It is difficult to know whether Mattishall had significantly improved or whether Hethersett were guilty of complacency.
Hethersett struggled in the first half and fell behind after 40 minutes when a long centre was headed home at the back post.
Hethersett continued to struggle in the second half with the referee playing a major part in the game. In the end it was the introduction of subs Dave Stevens and Stuart Halton that won the match for the home side and again underlined the strength in depth of the first team squad.
After 75 minutes Lee Barrett crossed and Stevens volleyed home and eight minutes from the end Stuart Halton scored from close in. With Lee Barrett being sent off for what looked like an innocuous challenge, Hethersett had to weather a late storm with Mattishall striking the underside of the bar with a free-kick and Chris Brownbridge called into action to make some good saves.
Norman Wanderers (0) 1 2 Hethersett Athletic (0) 1 2 84 min, 109 min M. Appleton 65
Venue: Sloughbottom Park. Weather - Dull but warm. Pitch - Very good. Referee N. Shaw 38 out of 100.
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Matt Cartledge, Ross Potter, James Rice (sub Danny Holman 89 min), Matt Elwin (sub Will Cook 107 min), John Curtis, Lee Barrett, Adam Bunton, Dave Stevens, Stuart Halton (sub Mark Appleton 56 min), Sam Wenham.
Hethersett were unceremoniously dumped out of the Norfolk County Cup in this second round match against what can only be referred to as uncompromising opponents.
Once again the game was spoiled by a very poor display of refereeing that saw Ross Potter dismissed for deliberate handball (a bookable and not sending off offence) and 'keeper Chris Brownbridge giving his marching orders for a late incident, the nature of which was very unclear.
Indeed the Norman Wanderers equaliser was met with an ugly pitch invasion by their substitutes, management and spectators that the referee did little to stop.
Those events overshadow the football that was played in a close game that saw just one real chance for each team in the first half. Hethersett brought on sub Mark Appleton after 56 minutes and he had an immediate affect in creating chances and it was no surprise when he sprung the offside trap to give Hethersett the lead after 65 minutes.
Hethersett continued to make chances and seemed to be comfortably easing their way into the third round until Potter and Brownbridge's sending offs reduced them to nine men.
Norman equalised with six minutes to go and scored the winner deep into extra-time when a very tired Hethersett nine failed to clear a last gasp attack.
Marlborough (1) 1 Hethersett (0) 0 Wines 40 mins
Venue: Eaton Park. Weather - warm Pitch very good condition. Referee R Taylor 10 out of 10
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Adam Bunton, Ross Potter (sub Stewart Halton 65 mins), John Curtis, Neil Steward, Dave Stevens (sub Mark Siddell 71 mins), Chris Steele, Sam Wenham, Matt Elwin, Mark Appleton, Lee Barrett.
Hethersett and Marlborough produced a good game of football, which neither side deserved to lose.
But it was the home side that won the game with a 40th minute strike. Both teams had numerous chances but the 'keepers were in outstanding form with Chris Brownbridge making a number of point blank saves with his legs.
Hethersett fielded a patched up defence with both Adam Bunton and Neil Steward making their league debuts. With a number of players out through injury and unavailability it was a tribute to the hard work of the Hethersett side who matched their opponents for most of the game, although at times they gave the ball away too cheaply.
Mark Appleton fashioned a number of chances out of nothing but the Marlborough 'keeper was in unbeatable form. The win took Marlbrough to the top of the league, but Hethersett still have a game in hand and a better goal difference. They must now put the disappointments of the past two weeks behind them and concentrate on returning to winning ways.
Hethersett (0) 0 Norman Wanderers (0) 2 68 min, 70 min
Venue: Easton College. Weather - warm. Pitch - good condition but wet. Referee B Jefferies 9
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Adam Bunton, Matt Steward, Ross Potter (sub Dave Stevens 69 min), Neil Steward, Chris Steele, John Curtis, Matt Elwin (sub Mark Siddell 73 min), Sam Wenham, Lee Barrett, Mark Appleton (sub Matt Cartledge 69 min).
Hethersett lost for an unprecidented third consecutive game as their title hopes took a knock and they dropped to third place behind Marlborough and Delaneys.
The home side could have no complaints after they were beaten by a more solid Norman team, who this time came to play football and showed that they could be serious title contenders themselves.
There was little to chose between the sides in a goalless first half with both having good chances. After the break, however, Norman looked the better organised side and score twice in four minutes midway through the half to deservedly take the points. Hethersett rarely threatened after falling behind.

Hethersett returned to winning ways thanks to an excellent second half display against Quebec and a quick-fire hat-trick from substitute Mark Appleton.
The first half was very tight in difficult conditions as driving rain made good football difficult. As the pitch cut up, Hethersett took the lead after 34 minutes in rather bizarre circumstances. An intended back pass struck the Quebec keeper on the knee and looped into the net.
Two goals in eight minutes gave Quebec a half-time lead, however, before Hethersett regained their scoring touch. After 60 minutes Lee Barrett worked his way into a shooting chance before being pulled over and Chris Steele coolly slotted home the penalty.
Substitute Mark Appleton was brought on after 55 minutes and had an amazing impact on the game, After 65 minutes he sprung the offside trap to round the keeper to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Twelve minutes later he once again ran through to lob the keeper and four minutes from the end he completed his hat-trick when he fired home across the 'keeper.
The victory took Hethersett back to second place in the Premier Division, just one point behind leaders Marlborough.

TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Neil Steward, Matt Steward, Matt Cartledge (sub Stuart Halton), Thomas Stearman, John Curtis, Adam Bunton, Sam Wenham, Gary Smith, Mark Appleton, Matt Elwin (sub Mark Siddell 77 min).
Hethersett were forced to make a number of changes through injury and suspensions with new signings Gary Smith and Thomas Stearman being drafted in.
Despite taking a second half lead and looking in control of the game, Hethersett threw the points away with a lack-lustre display in the last 20 minutes.
Acle opened the scoring after just six minutes and it took Hethersett 32 minutes to get back on level terms when John VCurtis worked his way free and scored with a low shot.
Hethersett took the lead within seconds of the start of the second half with Mark Appleton sending in the perfect centre for Matt Elwin to shoot home.
Sadly Hethersett missed numerous chances to increase their lead and paid the penalty as Acle took the points with two late goals, although Hethersett could have no complaints about the final scoreline..

TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Mark Garrod, Chris Arnold, Scott Newstead, Matt Elwin, Matt Steward, Gary Smith, Sam Wenham (sub Mark Siddell 55 min), John Curtis, Stuart Halton, Neil Steward (sub Nick Bunton 75 min).
Hethersett put in their worst performance for many months and ended a well beaten team with defensive mistakes, a lack-lustre midfield and a punchless strike force all contributing to the defeat and showing just how much the team are missing key players..
Hethersett (0) 0 The Grove (0) 3 59 min, 68 min, 85 min
TEAM: Tom Harvey, John Curtis, Mark Moseley, Neil Steward, Matt Stewrd (sub Will Cook 50 min), Ross Potter, Lee Barrett, Matt Elwin, Nick Bunton, Mark Siddell, Matt Cartledge
Hethersett suffered their third successive defeat as they showed relegation form rather than championship. Three second half goals were gifted to The Grove who celebrated as if they had won the FA Cup. There is little else that can be said about the game.
Hillside Old Boys (1) 2 Hethersett (2) 3 30 mins, 90 mins Matt Steward 12 mins, 77 mins Sam Wenham 24 mins

Hethersett progressed to the second round of the Norwich Sunday League Cup but made heavy weather of beating first division Hillside Old Boys.
Hethersett were again without a number of key players but squandered numerous chances to put this game well beyond their opponents' reach. Hethersett's play was disjointed and what should have been an easy victory turned into a tight match.
After making all the early running the visitors took the lead on 12 minutes when a Neil Steward free kick was only parried by the 'keeper into the path of Matt Steward who was alert enough to tap home the loose ball.
It was no surprise when Hethersett doubled their advantage after 24 minutes when Sam Wenham converted a centre from the right wing.
Instead of using this as a springboard, Hethersett were caught out on the half hour as Hillside pulled a goal back. The second half continued in a similar vein with central defender Matt Steward heading home a corner after 77 minutes for his second goal of the game.
Again Hethersett sat back and defensive frailties let in Hillside for a consolation goal in injury time. Hethersett will be looking to get key players such as striker Mark Appleton and midfielder Chris Steele fit for the second round in January.
Rosary Rams (0) 1 Hethersett Athletic (1) 4 75 mins Mark Appleton 47, 86 min Own Goal 39 min, Adam Bunton 88 min
TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, James Rice, Ross Potter, Mark Garrod, Matt Cartledge (sub Matt Steward 82 min), Neil Steward (sub Will Cook 73 min), Chris Steele, Adam Bunton, Chris Smedmor (sub Nick Bunton 55 mins), Lee Barrett, Mark Appleton. Hethersett Athletic returned to winning ways when they beat bottom club Rosary Rams 4-1 in the Norwich Sunday Premier Division. The scoreline flattered the visitors who had to rely on two late goals to make sure of the points after a spirited comeback from Rams. There were chances for both sides in the first half, but Hethersett took the lead after 39 minutes when a Chris Steele corner was turned into his own goal by a home defender. Hethersett looked to be on their way to a comfortable victory when Neil Stewart set up Mark Appleton to score with a hard low shot just two minutes into the second half. With Steele and Appleton returning after injury Hethersett looked a more balanced team but the fragility of the midfield and defence was shown up after 75 minutes when Rams headed home a free kick as Hethersett went to sleep. The home side looked capable of snatching a point until the 86th minute when Appleton went on a powerful surging run that took him past a defender before cutting in to score with an unstoppable drive. Two minutes later Appleton beat the offside trap and squared the ball for Adam Bunton to tap home. The victory takes Hethersett back up to third place in the table. This Sunday they travel to play second placed Norman Wanderers at Sloughbottom Park. Hethersett have been drawn away to runaway Division 1A leaders AFC Wanderers in the second round of the League Cup on January 27th. Norman Wanderers (2) 2 Hethersett Athletic (0) 0 27, 43 min TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Will Cook, James Rice, Matt Steward, John Curtis, Adam Bunton, Sam Wenham (sub Matt Cartledge 76 min), Chris Steele, Stuart Holton (sub Neil Stewart 63 min), Mark Appleton, Lee Barrett Hethersett lost for the third time this season to Norman Wanderers and this time the home team deserved the win. They were the stronger outfit throughout the game and played together as a team whereas Hethersett looked lack-lustre at times and squandered what few chances came their way. Norman opened the scoring with a long shot after 27 minutes and made it 2-0 after 43 minutes. Hethersett had a couple of penalty appeals turned down and Holton and Curtis both had shots cleared off the line but this was never going to be Hethersett's day and Normans missed numerous chances to increase their lead. AFC Wanderers (0) 1 1 Hethersett Athletic (0) 1 1 58 min John Curtis 70 min AFC Wanderers won 5-3 on penalties TEAM: Chris Brownbridge, Will Cook, Mark Garrod, Matt Steward, Adam Bunton (sub Stuart Halton 64 mins), Chris Steele, Sam Wenham, John Curtis, Lee Barrett, Neil Steward, Mark Appleton. Subs (not used) - Matt Cartledge and Nick Bunton Hethersett's final chance of a trophy from a disappointing season evaporated as they went out of the League Cup at the second round stage against unbeaten Division 1B side AFC Wanderers. The game brought a contrast in styles with AFC playing the direct long ball game and Hethersett playing their more intricate passing game. It was an excellent cup game with both teams having numerous chances. Despite this the first half was goalless. AFC took the lead after 58 minutes when a long ball out of defence found a forward who smashed it home from outside the penalty area. Hethersett hit back and deservedly equalised when Lee Barrett ended a fine run with a ball to John Curtis who cut inside to fire a low shot home. It was a typical Hethersett goal. Hethersett were well on top in extra-time as AFC tired and held on to take the game into penalties where they triumphed 5-3. Sub not used - Mark Moseley Hethersett got a good point from a competitive and enjoyable game with both goals coming within a five minute period in the first half. Lee Barrett scored the goal of the season when he worked his way across the area and slammed in a shot from 25 yards. Acle hit back to equalise. The game ebbed and flowed in the second half with a draw a very fair result. This was a thoroughly disappointing result against lowly opposition. Lee Barrett scored after five minutes, but Rosary Rams hit back to take a 2-1 half-time lead. Hethersett had virtually all the play after the break but failed to make the most of their chances and Rosary held on with some rugged tackling and long clearances. Rosary had two players booked and one sent off for abuse to a linesman. Prince of Denmark built up a 3-0 lead within the first hour before Hethersett awoke from their slumbers with goals from Dominic Jones and Matt Steward. Hethersett continued to press forward in search of an equaliser but squandered too many chances. For the second week running Hethersett found themselves three goals down due to some sloppy play that saw them give the ball away too easily. Poringland built up an unassailable lead and all the home side had to show for their endeavours was a headed Matt Steward goal two minutes from time. Hethersett took a point from a 3-3 draw against Quebec with goals from Lee Barrett, Mark Appleton and James Pipe. They followed this up with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a very experienced Delaneys team. Team v Quebec - B. Shearing, J. Pipe, R. Potter, M. Garrod, L:. Appleton, D. Jones, M. Moseley, D. Lee Barrett was on top form with a hat-trick and James Pipe added a fourth from the penalty spot. Barrett opened the scoring after 17 minutes with a hard low shot into the corner of the net. He made it 2-0 after 35 minutes with a spectacular goal from 45 yards after seeing the goalkeeper off his line.
