Athletic travelled to White Hart Lane, London, to play Haringey
Borough in their first Premiership match after gaining promotion last
season. Expectations were high after a very successful pre-season build
up. The match
supplied great entertainment. Within the first minute Nicola Stolworthy
went close and then Jodie Allard saw a free-kick fly inches wide of the
left post. Golden boot
winner, for both league and club, Nicola Bray, opened the scoring for
Hethersett on the 20th minute. The first half continued at a
very high level with exceptional efforts from both teams, considering
the soaring temperatures. Haringey got an equaliser after 40 minutes
only to be denied a half time lead thanks to a second goal from Nicola
Bray who put Hethersett back in the lead just before the half-time
whistle. In the second
half the tempo rose higher as both teams wanted three points from their
first league match. Haringey equalised for a second time to make the
score 2-2 but Hethersett again pushed themselves into the lead when
Nicola secured her hat-trick. Hethersett almost had the match sewn up as
substitute Sophie Fuller went close. Haringey, who are well known
for pulling results out of the bag, stayed true to form and equalised
once more to make the final result 3-3. A good
performance from Hethersett and a comfortable start to the season. September 2nd Woodbridge Town 2 Hethersett Athletic 0 Hethersett gave a very disappointing display to go down to their fiorst defeat of the season at Woodbridge. September 9th Hethersett Athletic 9 Royston Town 1 Hethersett put the disappointment of taking just one point from their first two games firmly behind them as they hammered Royston. They wer 7-0 up at the interval thanks to two goals from Emily Coates, two from Nicola Stolworthy, two from Jemma Smythe and one from Nikki Wigg. The second half was a rather disjointed affair with Royston pulling a goal back before Coates completed her hat-trick and Sophie Fuller completed the scoring. September 23rd Hethersett Athletic 5 Cambridge United 0 Hethersett put all memories of their poor start to the season behind them as they continued their climb up the league with a solid, if at times uninspiring victory over Cambridge United. Hethersett took until the 40th minute to open the scoring when Sophie Fuller scored with a fine drive. The second half was only seconds old when Emily Coates made it 2-0. The remainder of the goals came in a five minute spell at the end of the game as Cambridge tired. Nicola Bray scored a brace and Lisa Ferdani was also on the scoresheet. October 3rd Norwich City 0 Hethersett Athletic 1 Match report by Peter Steward Hethersett were crowned unofficial champions of Norfolk after a display full of character saw off the challenge of the much heralded Norwich City Ladies. The win took the team up to fourth place in the league, just two points behind the leaders with a game in hand on all the teams above them. Earlier in the season in the Pink Un newspaper Norwich City had referred to themselves as the top side in the county. This was all the impetus Hethersett needed to take them on and prove otherwise. Above all this was a display of determination from the Hethersett team with every player playing their part in a memorable victory from a game full of good football. There was little to chose between the teams in the first half. If Norwich looked slightly more composed on the ball, Hethersett arguably had the better chances with Nicola Bray over-running the ball when sent clean through. Bray and Emily Coates were working tirelessly and the visitors' defence seemed to be coping comfortably with the Norwich threat with goalkeeper Karen Wilson having a relatively quiet time. Norwich did go close, however, when they breeched the Hethersett defence for one of the few times in the game and saw a shot hit the inside of the post before being cleared. There were chances for both teams after the break but the only goal of the game came after 51 minutes and followed a piece of individual magic from Nicola Bray. She found herself tight on the goalline and facing two defenders. Somehow she managed to drag the ball round and dart through a miniscule gap before delivering the inch perfect centre for substitute Lisa Ferdani to tap home. Jemma Smythe missed a good opportunity and towards the end Bray shot inches wide on the break. Above all the later stages will be remembered for a sterling defensive display of grit and determination as the players visibly tired. Overall it was a memorable performance from Hethersett. If they continue to play with this much passion it will take a very good side to beat them. Athletic cruised into a 2-0 half-time lead with an early long shot from Jodie Rettie and a fine solo goal from Sophie Fuller. After the break Nicola Bray made it 3-0 with a thunderous shot into the top corner of the net. Peterborough came back into the match for a while and pulled a goal back, but Nicola Stolworthy fired home a fourth to give Hethersett a deserved victory. Sub Lisa Ferdani Hethersett 7 Haverhill 1 Hethersett Athletic Ladies played host to Haverhill Rovers at Easton College. A previous meeting saw Hethersett come away with a 3-1 victory. The game started lively with Hethersett applying pressure from the start. After just 10 minutes , last season's top goalscorer, Nicola Bray opened the scoring with a well taken shot, followed five minutes later with a goal from Hethersett captain, Jemma Smythe. The match continued in high spirits with Haverhill’s goalkeeper making some good saves. Hethersett Athletic have had a very successful start to their new season in the Premier Division. They are currently top and enjoying every minute of their first season at top flight. Recently three players attended trials for Arsenal and, up to date reports, convey that at least one player has been selected to return for a second trial in February, next year. This is great news for the club and indicates that all the hard work and expertise of the management and coaching staff is paying off. All Hethersett’s players are fully committed to their campaign and work extremely hard together at training. The work rate and togetherness has never been stronger and all players recognise the need for harmony within the whole squad. The first half saw a second goal from Nicola Bray, in the 22nd minute followed by two more from Sophie Fuller and Nicola Stolworthy just before the half time whistle. In the second half Haverhill came out still with a fighting spirit, but Hethersett, once again, hit the back of the net first with a goal from Emily Coates. Nicola Bray completed her hat-trick in the 70th minute followed with a late goal from Haverhill’s Karen Willliams. Hethersett's player of the match was Nicola Stolworthy. Hethersett moved four points clear at the top of the league with a fine victory over second placed Haringey. Three goals in each half destroyed the visitors as Hethersett continued their rich vein of form. Hethersett opened strongly and the only surprise was that it took them 23 minutes to open the scoring when Sophie Fuller volleyed home an Emily Coates centre. A poor kick out by the visitors' goalkeeper saw Fuller double the lead on the half hour when she smashed the ball back into the net and a minute later it was three when Emily Coates latched onto another poor clearance to fire home. As the half ended Karen Wilson was called upon to make a brave save at the feet of a Haringey player. Haringey came out strongly in the second half and Hethersett had to weather an attacking storm before Laura Hodgson fired home to make it 4-0 after 76 minutes with a Haringey defender only able to help the ball into the net. Nine minutes later Nicola Bray ran through, rounded the 'keeper and rolled the ball home for number five. Haringey pulled a goal back four minutes from time before Fuller rounded off a fine display by completing her hat-trick in injury time. Hethersett avenged an early season defeat at the hands of Woodbridge to stay on top of the league - four points clear of the chasing pack. Hethersett dominated this game from start to finish with Sophie Fuller opening the scoring after 18 minutes from the penalty spot and Nicola Bray adding a second after 30 minutes when she fired home off the 'keeper from an acute angle. After the break Hethersett scored three times in a five minute period with Sophie Fuller scoring with a shot into the top of the net, Bray weaving her way through a static defence and Jemma Smythe rising high above the defence to head home an Emily Coates centre. Hethersett opened up a seven point gap at the top of the league with their sixth consecutive league victory on a gluepot of a pitch The visitors took a 3-0 lead with goals from Laura Hodgson, Nicola Bray and Emily Coates before Dagenham pulled one back. Bray then added her second before the home side completed the scoring. of seven consecutive victories came to an abrupt end as they lost for
only the third time this season. It remains to be
seen how serious an effect this will have on the team’s championship
hopes. Despite the defeat,
Hethersett remain seven points clear at the top of the Eastern Region
Premier Division with eight league games to go. With Haringey Borough
also losing, Hethersett’s nearest rivals for promotion are now
Peterborough who are seven points behind with two games in hand and
Norwich City who are 10 points behind but with four games in hand. Hethersett’s only
goal in a very disappointing result against Bedford came from Logan
Shepherd. The team will be
hoping to return to winning ways in their next league game at home to
Dagenham and Redbridge on January 6th. Hethersett had to "win ugly" to ensure maximum points that took them 10 points clear at the top of the league. With Peterborough and Norwich both having numerous games in hand, Hethersett have to keep winning to stay on course for the title. Hethersett were rocked after just nine minutes when a long range Dagenham shot drifted into the top corner of the net. Dagenham also hit the post in the first half. Hethersett's best effort was a shot that skimmed the bar from Laura Hodgson after a strong run. Hethersett had most of the play after the break although Dagenham continued to look dangerous on the break. Hethersett equalised after 56 minutes when Nicola Bray volleyed home a right wing corner. Town are runaway leaders of the league above Hethersett, so the scoreline was no disgrace and will show the standard Hethersett will have to achieve if they are to compete in the higher league next season. Hethersett Ladies 3 Barking Ladies 0 Hethersett returned to league action Both sides found it tough going against the wind and it took Hethersett 40 minutes to open the scoring when Nicola Bray headed home a free kick from just outside the area following a hand ball. Hethersett dominated after the break and doubled their lead after 60 minutes when Adele McCrory scored her first goal for the club with a free-kick from 23 yeards that took a wicked deflection. the double over Norwich City as the top two clashed in the Eastern
Region Premier Division battle of the Norfolk Titans. The win took the
village side 13 points clear of second placed Norwich who still have
four games in hand. Both teams were
desperate for victory in their bid to gain promotion to the third
national tier of women’s football. It was a fiercely competitive match
that saw a Norwich City coach sent off for remarks made to the referee
and a number of Norwich players also booked. Hethersett’s destiny
is now in their own hands. With points in the bank they know that
winning their last five matches will make the title and promotion a
certainty. Without a league game
this week, they will have time to reflect on a job well done. Hethersett
fielded new signing Sarah Quantrill in goal and Zoe Klimcke from
Haverhill replaced stalwart Logan Shepherd in defence after the latter
was ruled out through illness. Any nerves Hethersett
may have had were soon settled as Emily Coates gave them a lead inside
the first couple of minutes when she headed home a corner. After 35
minutes Jodie Rettie scored the goal of the season when she slammed a
shot into the top corner from 25 yards. Hethersett knew that
Norwich would come at them in the second half and the visitors changed
their formation to pack midfield in an effort to drive forward. It
looked as if the tactics would pay off when former Hethersett player
Hayley Martin pulled a goal back on the hour. After that the game
could have gone either way with both teams having chances. Nicola Bray
hit the post twice for Hethersett and Sophie Fuller failed to make the
most of a one on one with the ‘keeper, but Hethersett held on for a
deserved victory and three more vital points. “Norwich had a
substantial amount of possession but rarely penetrated our defence. We
know that we may now be just five matches away from a dream
promotion in our first season in the Eastern Region Premier Division. We
must guard against complacency as we have some difficult away games to
come, but we know that our destiny is in our own hands although there is
plenty of football to play and plenty of possible twists and turns
before the season ends,” said co-manager Tom Parke. “Our preparation for
the game was meticulous and the players put in a tremendous amount of
hard work throughout the week,” said Parke adding that the help of
veteran coach Donny Pye throughout the season has been an added bonus. “Donny has done a
wonderful job getting over his tactics to the team in a very calm and
effective way,” he said. Hethersett’s player
of the match against Norwich was Sophie Fuller who gave another tireless
show in midfield. This week Hethersett were due to find out who their
opponents will be in the semi-finals of the League Cup. This Sunday
Parke will have the opportunity to try out some new formations with a
friendly against Kettering. Hethersett had most of the chances and should have won by a greater margin but missed two penalties.
