Hethersett Athletic 6
Aylsham Sunday 2

Hethersett Athletic played some sparkling football to comfortably overcome the challenge of Aylsham in the First Round of the Pink Un Norwich Sunday League Cup.

Athletic were always in control of a game and could have won by a wider margin than the 6-2 scoreline.

The pace of Sam Wenham, John Curtis and Mark Appleton proved too much for an at times static Aylsham defence.

Hethersett led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Mark Appleton and James Rice. Aylsham pulled one back three minutes into the second half before Hethersett hit a purple patch with three goals in a 13 minute period.

Danny Self scored the goal of the game after 58 minutes when he volleyed a headed clearance home. John Curtis showed speed, skill and determination to score a brace after 62 and 71 minutes, the first of which saw him charge down a clearance from the ‘keeper and the second came when he pounced on another bad back pass. Aylsham pulled a goal back after 79 minutes but Mark Appleton put the icing on the cake with his second after 84 minutes.

Matt Steward and Dean Fitzgerald both had efforts disallowed and Hethersett had enough chances to have scored double figures. It was a special game for Steward who was making his 250th league and cup match for the club. Martyn Carver was outstanding in the Hethersett defence.

Hethersett are fast turning Easton College into a fortress with five wins and a draw there this season. In their last four games the team has scored 22 goals and go into Sunday’s top of the table clash with Norman Wanderers full of confidence (kick off 10.30 a.m at Easton College).

Athletic Men’s A team moved into second place in Division 4B of the Norwich Sunday League despite only drawing 3-3 with lowly Mundesley. Lewis Allen scored twice and the other came from Andy Oliver. The A team take on Taverham Reserves on Hethersett Memorial Playing Field this Sunday (10.30 a.m)

Hethersett Women’s team, who are top of the East Anglian Ladies Eastern Division, took on Bedford who are top of the Western Division in the second round of their League Cup competition and put in an outstanding performance to win 3-0. Like their male counterparts the women’s side are unbeaten at Easton College with six wins out of six.

Nicola Bray opened the scoring for Hethersett after two minutes with her first goal for the club. The home side then raced into a 3-0 half-time lead with two goals from Emily Coates and then defended extremely well in the second half in difficult conditions. Such was their superiority that Bedford scarcely had a chance.

This Sunday the women’s team are home to Brentwood Town. Brentwood are the only side to beat them this season. Kick off at Easton College is 2 p.m.

The club’s Under-15s visited Lakeford in the League Cup and went down 9-0. The Under-14s drew 0-0 at Poringland in the league and the Under-10s went down 2-0 to Mattishall at Blofield. The Girls Under-11s beat Blofield Utd 3-1 with two goals from Sophie Rock and one from Teagan Faulkner.

All other club matches at the weekend were postponed due to the weather.

This Sunday the men’s reserves visit Drayton, the Under-16s also visit Drayton and the Under-15s are home to Drayton (Memorial Playing Field 2 p.m). The Under-14s visit Blofield, the Under-13s are home to Lakeford (Old Hall School 10.30 a.m), the Under-12s are home to Lakeford (Old Hall School 2 p.m), the Under-11s visit Scole and the Under-9A team play Sprowston Athletic and Blofield at Sprowston.
