King Kevin inspires Fenman

Leggett at the double as Lynn outfit win fourth senior cup in six years

By Greg Plummer

Fenman manager Steve Leggett hailed his side after watching them secure their fourth Senior Cup triumph in the space of six years.

Two goals in the opening seven minutes set the Lynn Sunday League outfit on their way as they emulated Norwich City's feat of the previous day by netting five times on the Carrow Road turf.

Leggett said: "Sunday was the best we've played for some time and I felt we were always going to win after getting off to such a flying start.

"The Hethersett penalty miss proved to be the turning point and I was pleased for Danny (Cook) who wasn't sure if he would be fit to play until just before the game.

"I felt 5-0 was a bit harsh on them. They caused us problems and could quite easily scored two or three goals."

Leggett added: "The first final was a big day out for us, but I take pleasure from reaching every final and hopefully we'll be back again next year."

There was a string of fine performances throughout the Fenman side.

Striker turned defender and occasional goalkeeper Kevin Leggett bagged a brace, but Kieran Doherty, Gary Bush, Robbie Back and Kevin White all made solid contributions in the five-star display.

Fenman shotstopper Danny Cook also played his part with his second penalty save of the week, following his spot-kick stop in the Ridgens League Downham-Swaffham derby, as well as some important stops at crucial periods of the game.

A rampant Fenman side opened the scoring in the 5th minute when a long clearance from Leggett found Jonathon Hawes, who made no mistake with a cool finish.

Two minutes later, Bush delivered a pinpoint corner from the right and Leggett thumped home a header for 2-0.

In the 36th minute a quick thinking free-kick from Paul Hunt saw Back turn his marker and slot the ball home.

A fourth came eight minutes into the second half when Lewis Hemeter's cross was touched into the net by the Hethersett goalkeeper, who had a shaky afternoon between the posts.

Fenman's fifth came in the dying seconds when the Bush-Leggett corner combination saw Leggett score with his second header of the morning.

A game Hethersett side had more than their fair share of chances with young Wroxham striker Ben Thompson the unluckiest culprit in front of goal.

Thompson saw his 13th minute penalty well saved by Cook, before twice going close to opening his side's account in the space of six first half minutes.

The same player was again foiled by Cook's brilliance in first half injury time and he continued to rue his luck after the interval.

Nine minutes after the re-start Thompson hit a Fenman post and 13 minutes from time a suicidal back pass from Bush allowed him to round Cook, only to see his shot deflected wide of the target.
