Day of Drama
The Ladies team made a dramatic exit from the League Cup when they went down 5-4 on penalties to Eastern Region Premier Division champions Cambridge City after drawing 1-1 after extra-time.
A pulsating quarter-final tie went right to the wire as both sides had chances to win the match and Hethersett had three shots cleared off the line as they strove to become giantkillers. At the end of 120 minutes of football there was nothing to separate the teams after Nicola Bray had cancelled out an early Cambridge strike.
It was drama all the way as both sides converted their first four penalties. The Cambridge goalkeeper was then sent off for foul and abusive language towards the referee. Sadly Hethersett missed their fifth penalty and with it the chance of reaching the semi-finals. The game did prove that our team can compete with the best teams in East Anglia.
The Ladies team have the perfect chance to banish the cup blues when they take on Norwich City Ladies in the semi-finals of the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup this coming Sunday (March 18th) at Easton College with a 2 p.m kick off.
Title Hopes Are Hit
The men's first team's title aspirations were hit when they went down 5-1 at Norman Wanderers.
The defeat saw them drop to fourth place behind Norman, Delaneys and Marlborough. They need to put the defeat behind them quickly as the next two weeks see them play Delaneys at home on March 18th and Marlborough away on March 25th. With games in hand on the sides above them it is vital thatwe avoid defeat in both these games. Current leading positions in the Premier Division of the Norwich Sunday League are:
CHAMPIONS
The Ladies team are champions of the Eastern Region Women's Division One East.
Needing only a draw to take the title, they turned on the style at Easton College to beat closest rivals Chelmsford 7-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Nicola Bray, two goals from Hazel Brewster and one each from Amy Brooks and Emily Coates. Now the team look like running away with the top spot.
After the game the team celebrated the title and promotion to the Eastern Region Premier Division with champagne.
