Hethersett Athletic’s remaining hope of a trophy disappeared on Sunday as they were knocked out of the Norwich Sunday League Cup by runaway Division 1B leaders AFC Wanderers. It was a game between teams with contrasting styles with AFC favouring the direct long ball approach and Hethersett playing their usual passing game. Overall it was an excellent cup tie with both teams squandering numerous chances. Chris Brownbridge in the Hethersett goal made some outstanding saves and at the other end Hethersett’s final pass all too often went astray. AFC took the lead on 58 minutes with a good goal. A long ball from midfield found a striker 20 yards out and he blasted the ball into the top corner. Hethersett hit back and equalised after 70 minutes when good work from Lee Barrett saw him set up John Curtis who held off a challenge to fire a hard low shot home. Extra-time failed to separate the teams with the home side desperately holding on as their Premier Division opponents mounted wave after wave of attack. In the ensuing penalty shoot out AFC scored their first four and Hethersett missed two to lose 4-2. Hethersett now only have their league campaign to concentrate on. This week they are due to play Quebec at Easton College, but there is some doubt over the game due to Quebec’s cup commitments. News on fixtures is available on Hethersett Athletic’s offical web site at www.hethersettathletic.org.uk

Hethersett Athletic Reserves enhanced their chances of avoiding relegation from Division 2B of the Norwich Sunday League with a good 2-1 win at home to mid-table Horsford Social Club. Both Hethersett goals came from Lewis Allen to take his total for the club to 165 with only his brother Scott Allen having scored more with 177. Despite the victory, their second in a row, the side stay second from bottom but are now just one point from safety. This Sunday they visit Thorpe Rovers for a vital relegation battle. Hethersett are just four points behind Thorpe but have two games in hand.

Hethersett A went down 2-0 at Sprowston and stay second from bottom of Division 4B of the Norwich Sunday League. This young and inexperienced side are still learning the facts of life of playing adult soccer and are still improving. This Sunday they are home to Dancing Farmers (Hethersett Memorial Field 10.30).

Ipswich Town  Ladies 6

Hethersett Athletic Ladies

Hethersett Ladies had a lesson in the footballing facts of life when they visited Ipswich Town in the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup.

Town play in the league above Hethersett and are runaway leaders of the South-East Women’s Combination with 13 wins in their 14 games and a 12 point lead at the top. Hethersett will be hoping to play at this level next season but first have to win the Eastern Region Premier Division title.

It was a good yardstick for the young Hethersett team against a side who next season are likely to be playing in the southern division of the national league – the second highest tier of ladies soccer.

Hethersett were not overawed by their illustrious opponents in the first half and at half-time were still in with a chance at just 2-0 down. After the break Ipswich’s experience told as they ran in four further goals with Nicola Stolworthy scoring Hethersett’s only goal of the game.

Despite the defeat, Hethersett are still in with a chance of a Eastern Region league and cup double. League results didn’t go their way at the weekend, however, with rivals Woodbridge Town and Norwich City both winning. Hethersett are now eight points clear of Woodbridge and 10 clear of both Norwich and Peterborough, although those teams have a number of games in hand.

This makes this Sunday’s visit to Peterborough a vital game for the team. Victory for Hethersett would virtually rule Peterborough out of the race but defeat would close the gap at the top considerably. Earlier in the season Hethersett beat Peterborough 4-1 at home.

The club is hoping to start a Ladies Reserve side next season and there will be more details of this at a later date. Latest positions in the Eastern Region Premier Division are:

Hethersett Athletic Youth Section had a rocky Sunday with only the Under-16s winning as they defeated Attleborough 3-1 in the league thanks to goals from Dyson, Dalmay and Ryan O’Sullivan. Elsewhere Hethersett were unable to conjure up a single goal. The Under-15s lost 7-0 at Scole and the Under-14s went down 1-0 at home to Old Catton in their League Cup quarter-final. The Under-13s visited Costessey and went down 8-0 and the Under-11s visited Thorpe and lost 4-0. The Under-10A side were beaten 3-0 by Sprowston in the league cup quarter-final and the Under-10B side went down 7-0 to Rocklands in their league cup semi-final. This Sunday the Under-16s visit Salhouse, the Under-15s are home to Harling (Memorial Field 10.30), the Under-14s are home to Horsford (Old Hall School 10.30), the Under-13s visit Horsford and the Under-12s Blofield. The Under-11s are home to Scole (Old Hall School 2 p.m), the Under-10A side play Old Catton at Sprowston and the Under-10B side visit Dereham Wanderers Wildcats.

Hethersett Athletic Girls Under-12s returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at Aylsham thanks to two goals from Sophie Rock, taking her tally for the season to 15 from 11 games, and one from Teagan Felknor-Edwards. This was a good performance from Hethersett after the disappointment of losing to Red Rose in their previous game. The team turned in a very solid professional performance in very windy conditions. They were 2 - 0 up at half time and, continuing to play good passing football, moved into a 3 - 0 lead. Beth Evans and Constance Canning were solid at the back and the movement in midfield of Ella Stephenson and Sophie Rock was more than the Aylsham team could cope with. Aylsham scored a late consolation goal. This Saturday the Under-12s are home to Blofield (Easton College 10 a.m). Hethersett Girls Under-15s are also home on Saturday to Norwich City Canary Greens (Easton College 10 a.m).
