Prestigious Tournament Win for Hethersett Athletic

Hethersett Athletic returned from Manchester in triumph after winning the prestigious men's section of the Umbro International tournament.

The squad of 16 players beat Stretford Victoria in the final after remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament and conceding just one goal.

The tournament, which included sections for youth, men and women, attracted 450 teams from 25 countries and is one of the major contests of its kind in the country.

Hethersett came second in their group behind Stretford Victoria after winning two and drawing two of the games.

In the quarter-finals they won a tight match 2-1 against Springhead AFC and in the semi finals overcame South Manchester AFC 2-0. In the final they came up against Stretford Victoria again and coasted to a 3-0 win with goals from skipper Martyn Carver, Chris Smedmor and Ross Potter.

A total of 103 teams took part in the various men's sections and Hethersett took the Umbro.Com Trophy.

"I am very proud of my players. We played some tremendous football over the two days and our superior fitness shone through. We always try to play good football as we have a lot of talented ball players, but over the two days we also showed that we can match teams physically," said player manager Ross Potter.

The full Hethersett squad was: Martyn Carver, Chris Bolderstone, Mark Moseley, Mark Siddell, John Curtis, Chris Kerr, Matt Steward, Chris Brownbridge, Ross, Potter, Matt Barrett, Chris Smedmor, Danny Self, Chris Holmes, Sam Wenham, Dean Fitzgerald and Lee Brewer.
