A National FA Community Charter Club
Hethersett Athletic were victims of the gales on
Sunday as the first team’s vital top of the table clash with Delaneys
and the Ladies Norfolk and Suffolk County Cup semi-final against Norwich
City Ladies fell foul of the weather. Vicious swirling cross winds at Easton College made
it virtually impossible for players to keep on their feet. The men’s match against Delaneys did kick off
but, after just eight minutes, the referee stopped the game and both
sides agreed to an abandonment. “It was a vital game for both teams and neither
wanted to lose because of the conditions. It would have been a farcical
way to drop out of the title race with players not being able to keep on
their feet and clearances being caught in the wind and ending up behind
the defender,” said Hethersett chairman Peter Steward. This Sunday the side have another vital match when
they visit fellow title contenders Marlborough (Eaton Park, 10.30). The Ladies game was postponed half an hour before the kick off and will now be played this Sunday (Easton College 2 p.m). The winners of this game will meet Ipswich Town in the final after they beat Norwich City Canaries in the other semi-final. Hethersett Athletic Reserves and A team both had
disappointing results in their Norwich Sunday League matches. The Reserves went down 6-2 to Ex-Mile Cross with
James Leveritt scoring both their goals. The A team lost 3-2 at lowly
North Walsham Warriors with their goals coming from Paul Martin and Matt
Bradfield. It wasn’t a very good weekend for the Hethersett
club with only the Under-15s notching a win, 2-1 at home to Sprowston
with goals from Liam Buffin and Dyson. The Under-13s drew 1-1 with
Norman (Shane Smith) but all the other club sides lost. The Under-15 Girls went down 5-0 to West Norwich,
the Under-16s lost 1-0 to Attleborough, the Under-14s lost 6-1 to
Firside (Mirza), the Under-11s went down 5-0 at Norwich United and the
Under-9B side lost 6-1 at home to Harling (Rix). This week the Girls Under-15s visit Hempnall Hunnies on Saturday and on Sunday The Men’s Reserves are home to Champion Athletic (Memorial Field 10.30), the Men’s A visit Norfolk County Council, the Under-16s visit Watton, the Under-13s are home to Sprowston (Old Hall School 10.30), the Under-11s visit Bressingham and the Under-9B side play Toftwood at Little Melton School (10.30) |
