Poringland

Hethersett Athletic scored one of the fastest goals in the club’s history and then built up a comfortable 3-0 lead against Poringland before allowing the visitors back into the match.

The opening goal came in under 15 seconds following a sweeping move straight from the kick off which saw Lee Barrett tap home after a searching ball from John Curtis and a run behind the defence by Mark Appleton led to a pin point cross.

Hethersett made it 2-0 after 12 minutes when Barrett returned the compliment by setting up Appleton who drove forward to score. When Lee Barrett added a third after 29 minutes it looked as if a rout might be on the cards.

Gradually Poringland clawed their way back into the match and goals either side of half-time brought a new complexion to the game and saw Hethersett begin to struggle to hold opponents who were gaining in confidence.

Poringland looked certain to equalise in the last minute only for Luke Appleton to make a magnificent goalline clearance. Almost immediately play switched to the other end with Mark Appleton running in behind the Poringland defence to ensure all three points went to Hethersett.

The win brings the club’s title hopes alive again as they move into the top three of the Norwich Sunday League Premier Division for the first time this season. One of Hethersett’s problems at present is not being able to field a settled team due to injury and unavailability. On Sunday they were without Dean Fitzgerald, Scott Woodcock, Matt Barrett and Sam Wenham and Andy Milne stepped up from the reserves for his first senior game of the season.

This Sunday Hethersett visit Coltishall hoping to continue their push for the top of the league.

Hethersett Ladies, like their male counterparts, are through to the quarter-finals of the County Cup. On Sunday they comfortably overcame the challenge of UEA in the second round to win 5-0 with two goals from Donna Bonnett and Amy Brooks and one from Jodie Allard.

Overall it was a fine weekend for the club with the Under-15 Girls beating West Norwich 2-0 in the league (Symons and Broom) and the Girls Under-11 side travelling to Aylsham and winning 3-1 (Adelaide Mott 2 and Sophie Rock).

The Under-16s had a comfortable 6-1 win at Hellesdon (Waters 2, Marshall, Fisher, Cook and Martin), the Under-15s beat Wymondham United 4-0 (R O’Sullivan 2, L. Buffin, Dyson), the Under-14s beat Mulbarton in the League Cup with the only goal of the game coming from Jamie Crowe.

The Under-11s defeated Firside 3-1 (Foster 2 and Burton) and the Under-10s beat Salhouse 1-0 with an own goal. The Under-10s also went down 2-1 to Thorpe (Horsfield). The Under-9B side lost 3-1 at Harling (Jessop), the Under-13s drew 3-3 with Old Catton (Ford 2 and Keeley) and the Under-12s lost 7-0 at home to Firside.

This Saturday the Girls Under-15s are home to West Norwich in the League Cup (Memorial Field 10 a.m).
