A National FA Community Charter Club Hethersett Athletic
suffered another highly disappointing Sunday as all three men’s teams
went down. The firsts came up
against a very strong Norman Wanderers team and lost 2-0 to drop to
third place in the Norwich Sunday League Premier Division. The match saw Hethersett suffer their
third successive league and cup defeat in a row. After hitting the back
of the next with almost monotonous regularity in their opening five
games, they have now scored just one goal in three games. The home side could have no complaints after they were beaten by a more solid Norman team, who this time came to play football and showed that they could be serious title contenders themselves. There was little to chose between the
sides in a goalless first half with both having good chances. After the
break, however, Norman looked the better organised side and scored twice
in four minutes midway through the half to deservedly take the points.
Hethersett rarely threatened after falling behind. The team will have to pick itself up for
a difficult away match this Sunday at Quebec (Britannia Barracks 10.30
a.m). Hethersett Athletic Reserves went down
3-1 to Horsford Social Club with their goal coming from Eastman. The A
team lost 5-1 at home to Sprowston Rovers with their goal coming from
Andy Oliver. This Sunday the Reserves are home to Thorpe Rovers (Memorial Field 10.30) and the A team visit Dancing Farmers. Hethersett Athletic
Ladies team are finding that it’s getting tough at the top of the
Eastern Region Premier Division. On Sunday they moved
back into second place after a good 2-0 win at Barking thanks to goals
from Nicola Bray and Sophie Fuller. Hethersett are now just
two points behind leaders Woodbridge Town with a game in hand. It is
very close at the top, however, with the first five teams all having a
realistic chance of winning the title. Hethersett’s success to date has been built on enthusiasm and a miserly defence that has conceded just eight goals in eight games. This Sunday a titanic struggle is on the cards when Hethersett take on Peterborough at Easton College 2 p.m). The Cambridgeshire side have conceded just four goals in their six games. Latest league
positions are:
Hethersett Athletic Under-15 Girls take on North Walsham Angels this Saturday (Easton College 10 a.m) and the Under-12 Girls play Norwich City Canaries at Easton College at 10 a.m. Hethersett
Athletic Under-12 player Will Foster is setting the club goal charts
alight with 21 goals so far this season in just seven games. On Sunday
he was on target five times as his team swept away the challenge of
Blofield 6-2. Hethersett’s other goal came from McDonagh. Elsewhere it
wasn’t a very successful day for Athletic’s youth teams. The
Under-16s lost 3-2 at home to Salhouse (Dalmay and Molloy), the
Under-14s lost 4-2 at Horsford (Poole, A. Edwards), the Under-13s lost
4-1 to Horsford, the Under-11s went down 7-1 to Scole (Page), the
Under-10A team lost 2-0 to Sprowston and 1-0 to Scole and the Under-10B
side lost 7-0 at Dereham Wanderers. This week the Under-16s
visit Corinthians in the county cup, the under-15s are home to Thorpe
(Memorial Field 2 p.m), the Under-14s are home to Norman (Old Hall
School 10.30), the Under-13s visit Norman, the Under-12s are at Salhouse,
the Under-11s are home to Salhouse (Old Hall School 2 p.m), the
Under-10B side are home to Watton Wanderers (Little Melton School) and
the Under-9s play Drayton and Norwich United A at Drayton
