Presentation Evening - May 2001

Hethersett Athletic celebrated its most successful season to date with a presentation and celebration evening in the Norfolk Suite at Carrow Road, home of Norwich City, on Saturday May 19th, 2001.

Well over 200 players, parents, friends and supporters attended to hear how the Men's First Team won Division 3B of the Norwich Sunday League, how the Under-13s won the Norfolk Youth Combination Under-13 Cup and how the Women's team and Men's A teams reached cup finals. In addition the Under-13 girls won their league's fairplay trophy.

The main prizes of the evening were presented by Norwich City Youth Academy player Ben Thompson.

Charlotte Wins Top Award

The top award of the evening - the Lee Thompson Memorial Trophy - was won for the first time by a woman player. Charlotte Boreham was nominated by team manager Sue Milne for her versatility throughout the season. Charlotte had never before played in goal before the start of the season. A dedicated outfield player she had already been chosen to attend the Personal Development Course set up by Norwich City who had noticed her strength and fearless play. For the good of the team, however, Charlotte agreed to play in the new position and helped the side through a magnificent season which saw them finish runners-up in the league.

In addition the side reached the final of the League Cup. It was with the final approaching that the story took a sad twist. Charlotte loved playing outfield and was given the chance to do so in a seven a side match. She had put the side level with a superb goal against top of the table Thetford when tragedy struck and she had to go to hospital with what turned out to be a broken ankle which put her out for the rest of the season and saw her miss the cup final.

Charlotte had unselfishly helped what had previously been a youth team, grow into a genuine women's adult team. She could only sit and watch as the side went down 4-3 in the cup final to Aylsham. Throughout her injury Charlotte continued to smile.

The above nomination was good enough to win Charlotte the trophy presented annually for outstanding achievement by a player from the club. The trophy was set-up by the club in memory of Lee Thompson who tragically died in a road accident. The presentation to Charlotte was made by Lee's mother and father Ray and Mary Thompson.

Other nominations for the award were Craig Barker, Christian Lacey, Chris Thirtle and Danny Musson

Appearance and Goals Trophies

The evening saw a special presentation to Kelly McEwen (pictured) of the women's and girls under-15s side. She broke the club's individual scoring record for a season with 50 goals in 32 games - 33 for the women and 17 for the under-15s. There was also a special award for Daniel Musson who became only the second player in the club's history to score over 100 goals.

Five players completed 150 appearances for the club during the season and received special trophies from Martin Mouncer who leads the club's appearance records with 176. They were Robert Mitchell, Steven Beck and Chris Colwell of the Senior A team and Paul Martin and Danny Holman of the Reserves. They join Mouncer and Steven Perkins as the only players to have completed 150 games.

Six players received trophies to mark 100 games. They were Danny Musson, Paul Gregory and Tim Bolderstone from the Under-14s, Adam Kobylecki and Darren Brooks from the Under-15s and Chris Bolderstone from the Men's A Team.

Trophies for 50 appearances went to: Under 12s - Matthew Bradfield, Scott Allen, Jack Tarrant and Neil Anderson; Under-13s - James Rice, Lewis Allen, Thomas Harvey and James Pipe; Under-14s, Paul Miller, Shaun Hunton; Under-15s - Dean Bowden. Girls/Women's - Sarah Milne, Lizzie Wilbourn and Charlotte Boreham. Senior A - Chris Brownbridge. Senior Reserves - Sean Davis, Andy Moore and Jon Noad. Senior Firsts - Danny Gaskin, Lewis Mace, Robbie Lincoln, Nick Appleton and Scott Newstead.

The individual teams went on to make their own players of the year presentations and the evening rounded off with a disco.
