Hethersett Athletic Under-15s and Horsford get together after the match

A Hethersett Athletic footballer tragically killed in a road accident eight years ago was remembered at a special match on the Memorial Playing Field.

Hethersett Athletic Under-15s took on Horsford Under-15s in a challenge match for the new Lee Thompson Plate.

An excellent match in true sporting style saw the home side record a 3-1 victory after scoring two late goals to win what had been a fairly even match with both teams looking capable of scoring.

At the end of the game the Lee Thompson Memorial Plate was presented to winning captain James Youngs by Lee’s brother Ben Thompson, who is well known as a former Norwich City Academy player and who now plays for Wroxham.

The new plate will be contested annually between a Hethersett Athletic team and invited opponents. The trophies next outing is likely to be at the end of the current season when the current men’s first team will be taking on a team of former players who will be returning to the village from all over the world.

Lee Thompson made 49 appearances for the club as a youth player and also played for a number of other teams in the village. He died in 1999 and his memory has been kept alive by the club every year with the award of the Lee Thompson Memorial Shield for outstanding contribution to the club. The shield is currently held by vice-chair Sue Milne.
